Your gentle feet and tiny toes,

comforted my lap once upon a time,

My arms stroked you blissfully then,

for you, I hummed a calming rhyme,

But now my arms hold a muted song,

of your silence, bestowed on me by time,

Today, you lie on the same old lap,

indeed, lifeless and inert, yet so sublime.

I will keep on recalling you as a toddler,

henceforth, they will look at you as a leader,

Your cries were calmed by my caress then,

for them, now you are going to be the healer,

You rehearsed whatever I voiced, said, sang,

they will find knowledge in you, a teacher,

Today, while I weep, detached from my soul,

they will find peace, blessed by a preacher.

You were composed, unmoved by the ordeal,

but so much concerned about my well-being,

You knew who all sinned against you,

still, you said to adapt the art of forgiving,

You were spreading the message of kindness,

even when your disciples kept on betraying,

Hated; yet you insisted on spreading love,

regretted, Peter shall forever be weeping.

When you were not even born,

did you deserve to face hatred,

For spreading the message of kindness,

did you deserve to get hurt or wounded,

Was such ferocity justly indispensable,

to learn the essence of being kind-hearted,

Was your sacrifice truly obligatory,

to realise that love was supreme, sacred.

• किताब

     कपड़ों की ख़रीदारी पूरी कर सदानंद और कुमार किताबों की एक बड़ी दुकान पहुँचे। कुमार को किसी ख़ास इम्तिहान की पढ़ाई की ख़ातिर जो किताबें चाहिए थीं, उनमें से सिवा एक के सारी उसी दुकान में मिल गईं। दुकान-मालिक ने कहा, कि वह शायद ही कहीं मिल पाए। “ठीक है, फ़िलहाल इन्हीं को पढ़ो, बची हुई बाद में ढूँढ़ लेंगे।” सदानंद ने कुमार का हौसला बढ़ाते हुए कहा। दोनों दुकान के बाहर लौटे ही थे, कि यकायक सदानंद को कुछ याद आया। उसने उलटे रुख़ की ओर कार मोड़ी, और एक घने पेड़ की छाँव में फ़ुटपाथ पर जमी किताब की एक छोटीसी दुकान के सामने रोकी। ‘पेपर फ़्री ऑफ़िस’ और इंटरनेट के दौर में औरों की तरह सदानंद का भी किताबें ख़रीदना और पढ़ना न के बराबर हो गया था। कई सालों बाद वह यहाँ लौटा था। जब तक कुमार किताबें खोजता, सदानंद दुकान-मालिक से बात-चीत करने लगा। “गुज़ारा हो जाता है इतने में?” सदानंद ने पूछा। दुकानदार बोला, “बस, जैसे-तैसे चल जाता है।” ऊँचे ढेरों में किताबों को खोजना कुमार के लिए मुश्किल होता देख सदानंद मदद के लिए बढ़ा। बड़ी कोशिशों बाद कुमार को तो किताब न मिल पाई; मगर सदानंद को कई दिनों से जिसकी तलाश थी, उस मज़्मून^१ से मिलती-जुलती किताब मिल गई। “क्या क़ीमत?” सदानंद ने ख़ुश होकर पूछा।

     बरसों पहले जब सदानंद यहाँ आया करता, तब बोली हुई क़ीमत से आधी में ख़रीदने में फ़ख़्र महसूस करता था; मगर आज तक़ाज़ा-ए-उम्र^२ ने उसे मोल-तोल की इजाज़त नहीं दी। उसने ख़ुश होकर दुकानदार को मुँह-बोली रक़म अदा की। एक मुद्दत बाद सदानंद ने कोई पुरानी किताब ख़रीदी थी।

सादा कवर में महफ़ूज़^३ किताब, सहारा थी भीड़ के तनहा पलों में,

सहलाता था अलफ़ाज़^४ का तरन्नुम^५, मुआशरा^६ के शोर-ओ-गुल में,

कभी मुसकुराहट, कहीं ठहाके, दफ़अतन्^७ नमी भी आई पलकों में,

जाने कितनों के मुख़्तलिफ़^८ जज़्बात, आज भी दर्ज हैं पुराने पन्नों में.
