मैंने ही तहरीर किया है तुम्हारा बदहाल^१ मुक़द्दर^२,

मेरी अय्यार^४ अदब से वाक़िफ़ न हो, इतने तो तुम ग़ाफ़िल^५ नहीं,

फिर भी तुम उलझन में हो, यही एक कमाल है.

ग़ैरमुतवक़्क़िअ^६ नहीं शदीद^७ राहों पर अपनों का मुँह मोड़ना,

क़दम चलते रहे गुज़रगाह^१, हर मोड़ पर पड़ाव को मेरा इंतिज़ार था,

दरिया में लगाए गोते ने सिखाए, अलिफ़-बे^३ तह-ए-ज़िंदगी^४ तक जाने के,

सीखी ग़ालिब की तवाज़ो^५, जब आग़ोश में खोया समंदर के.

सदाक़त-ए-शीशा-ए-दिल^६ ने, पिघला दिया पत्थर की शदीदगी^७ को,

पुख़्ता भी थे मिज़ाज-ए-दिल^८, ललकारा न क़ाबिलीयत-ए-संग^९ को.

ख़ुददार मुहताज नहीं होता, ख़ुदग़रज़^१० दुनिया के रहम का,

Unfulfilled desires were plenty,

and were distressing indeed,

But inspired me to move on,

to cruise and to succeed.

Pleasing gestures and smiles,

made me forget the pain,

Sparked the courage within,

to bear the brunt and to sustain.

Occasionally I got drenched,

in the content of achieved ambitions,

Aroused hidden vigour too,

the shattered dreams and frustrations.

Sometimes I ignored a vocal truth,

believed in the lies unspoken,

Oblivious to honest promises,

I relied on the assurance broken.

Teachings guided my thoughts,

paved the way to proceed,

Wisdom kept the courage within,

judged my ability to lead.

Every so often I have failed,

to fathom the deepness of relations,

Only to find my existence,

scattered in the storm of emotions.

Endless search for joyous,

जिस अज़ीज़ की ख़ातिर तय की, कद-ओ-काविश^१ भरी पेचीदा रहगुज़र^२,

उसी क़रीब ने डाली बेड़ियाँ, जिससे शादाब^३ था हर पल का पस-ए-मंज़र^४,

क़दमों में उलझे रिश्तों के भँवर, धुँधली कर गए दिल-ओ-ज़िहन^५ की नज़र,

मुआफ़ी-ओ-शुक्रगुज़ारी^६ से परहेज़, ज़ीस्त^७ को कर गया बेक़रार-ओ-बेज़र^८.

हर कठिनाई ने बढ़ना सिखाया, कार्यशीलता को कर चपल,

सुप्त चरणों को कर जागृत फिर, उचित पथों पर क्रमण कराती।

कभी न टूटें धैर्य व संयम, कोई गरज गर मुझपर बरसे,

शत्रु न कोई, सभी मित्र हैं, कोई न आहत हों मुझसे।

यत्न हैं मेरे पथिक व साथी, कृपा की न मुझको अभिलाषा,

ख़ता मेरा ही था शायद, गुनाहगारों से चाहा करम^१,

मेरी बेग़रज़ी और मेरे तहम्मुल^३, ग़लत ही साबित हुए मुसल्सल^४,

थी मुझमें ख़ामियाँ अनगिनत मगर, ज़माना भी कहाँ था मुकम्मल^५.

बलंदी का क़द नहीं होता, न होती है परवाज़^६ की कोई हद,

मुक़ाम किसीको नहीं होता मयस्सर^७, फिर भी हौसला होता है अज़हद^८.

हर सादगी सहती है दग़ा, शराफ़त जूझती है तौहीन^९ से,

ख़ामोशी-ए-सदाक़त^१० भी चुभे जहाँ, क्या अंजाम हो शाइस्ता^११ जबाँ से.

आज का वल्वला^५ रवाँ जवाँ, सहारा बने हर ग़ैरइख़्तियारी^६ बुढ़ापे का,

आग़ोश में लिये मन्फ़ी^१ से ही, वुजूद बनता है दरिया का,

शायद इसी कड़वाहट का तअस्सुर^२, हौसला देता है उभरने का.

ज़िहन में ज़हर भरा हो, तो लाज़िम^३ है पैरवी झूठ की,

उतरती शक्ल दरअसल, कैफ़ियत^४ कहती है मायूसी की.

ग़ैरइख़्तियारी^५ है हर साँस की ख़ातिर, बढ़ना दर्द-ओ-उम्र का,

मरहम बनता है नफ़स^६, क़सूरवार भी ज़ख़्म-ए-मुस्तक़्बिल^७ का.

बढ़ते क़दमों को खींचती, बेशुमार^८ फैली भीड़ में,

मिल जाता हौसलाअफ़ज़ा, गाहबगाह^९ रहगुज़र में.

सुकून का ही अक्स देखा पैहम^१०, मंज़िल पाए हुए हर शख़्स में,

उनकी मुस्कानें बनीं हमराह, रहनुमा भी सफ़र-ए-ज़ीस्त^११ में.

कौन हुआ है आज़ाद, बंद-ए-दस्तूर-ए-दुनिया^१२ से,

• नूतन वर्षाभिनंदन

    महाराष्ट्र में ‘गुढी पाडवा’, दक्षिण भारत में ‘उगादी’ या ‘युगादी’, और अन्य कई राज्यों में विविध नामों से पहचाने जानेवाले चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा के दिन कुछ देशों में ‘लाठी उत्सव’ भी मनाया जाता है। लाठी, गुढी, पताकाएँ, पुष्पमालाएँ, तोरण इत्यादि माध्यमोंद्वारा विजय की घोषणा अथवा विजयी समूह का स्वागत करना संभवता इन प्रथाओं का हेतु रहा होगा। नीम के फूल व कोमल पत्ते, गुड़, हिंग, इमली, कैरी, धनियादाना, अजवायन, काली मिर्च, नमक इत्यादि वस्तुओं से बना नैवेद्य अर्पण करने की परंपरा कई समुदायों में प्रचलित है। विविध हितकर वनस्पति-रसों का संतुलित व नियमित सेवन निरामयता के लिए आवश्यक होने का संदेश देना इन परंपराओं का उद्देश्य होगा। साढ़े-तीन मुहूर्तों में से एक होने के कारण कई नए कार्यों व प्रकल्पों का इस मंगल अवसर पर शुभारंभ होता है। सृष्टि का रूप शीघ्र परिवर्तित होने लगता है। पतझड़ अपने अंतिम पड़ाव पर होता है, और कोमल पल्लव नूतनागमन की आहट लाता है। अनाज से लहलहाते खलिहान और पेड़-पौधों पर खिला बौर रंगबिरंगे पंछियों के लिए ख़ज़ाना साबित होता है। विविध पक्षियों के मंजुल कल-रव से केवल भोर ही नहीं, बल्कि पूर्ण दिवस ही कर्णमधुर हो जाता है। पश्चिमी देशों में यह काल त्योहार के रूप में चाहे न मनाया जाता हो, लेकिन वसंत ऋतु का मनोरम उपहार लेकर उपस्थित होता है, और आनंद की बौछार करता है।

     चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा के दिन ब्रह्माद्वारा सृष्टि की रचना हुई ऐसी मान्यता है। कई लोग इस दिन आदिशक्ति का पूजन करते हैं। रावणवध पश्चात राम का अयोध्या में आगमन और शालिवाहन ने शकोंपर पाया विजय भी इन्हीं दिनों की घटनाएँ मानी जाती हैं। विभिन्न पौराणिक कथाएँ व जीवनशैलियों की समीक्षा करने पर प्रतीत होता है, कि विजय का प्रतीक माना हुआ यह दिवस सुख, समृद्धि तथा ख़ुशहाली का संदेश देकर जनमानस को आनंद से सराबोर कर देता है।

आयो बसंत परिमल, श्वास करे हर चेतन,

पलाश करता चंचल, रचा सराबोर सपन,

दानों से हर्षित हर कण, मिट्टी का महके तन-मन,

चैतन्यता वह चैत की, चपल करे हर जीवन।

वर्धन हो ब्रह्मा के अप्रतिम का, सम्मान भी,

हो पराकाष्ठा पुरुषोत्तम सी, मर्यादा भी,

हो समृद्ध विश्व, मानस निरामय भी,

कर्म हो शालिवाहन से, बढ़े साम्राज्य, शांति भी।

# Hindu New Year, Gudhi Padwa

• Swaraaj and Suraaj

    Music is said to bridge the widest gaps, but the conspicuous absence of Bapu’s favourite hymn struck off this notion. Many arguments won, and so did some counterarguments, but the music lost. The decision of excluding ‘Abide with me’ from ‘Beating Retreat’ was more painful than surprising. This was tried some time back also. The decision had to be reversed due to a display of displeasure across the nation. This year it seems to be a firm decision, even though the displeasure is more intense than yesterday. The shifting of ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ on the grounds of wiping out the leftovers of British rule could not explain the continuing existence of numerous architectural marvels of colonial times. While we appreciate western countries for the practices of preserving historical monuments, India saw and shall continue to witness the painful demolition of a series of beautiful vintage constructions, including temples, to create space for politically driven novel and ambitious projects. Right from the very first one, every such decision was the brainchild of a solitary thought process which misused the allotted authority to fulfil personal whims and fancies. Each decision was made with the sole purpose of short-term political gains and reserved desires. Every such verdict highlighted the profound and deep-rooted irresponsibility of the short-sighted self-proclaimed visionaries. An ambitious foundation which was not even born when India became sovereign is relentlessly trying to erase immortal verses inscribed by history just to hide its own inability to etch constructive landmarks. This is sad, but scary.

    For seventy years, all innocent souls grew up watching themselves or friends delivering speeches about the father of the nation or dressing up as Netaji. Bhagat Singh, Azad, Nehru, Tilak followed in various forms and left an enduring mark on everyone’s heart. Suddenly, the same old souls were fed with maliciously twisted facts to raise a false alarm about the previous managers’ ignorance towards the great martyrs. Some of the freedom fighters were chosen and brought into a new light and were presented in a conveniently altered form. Memories of all such historical figures have been consistently leaving a permanent mark on society in various physical forms, like statues, roads, educational institutions, museums, libraries, airports and so on. The spiritual space for these historical figures in people’s hearts is rather permanent. The nation has been remembering these freedom fighters for a long time. Adding one more statue or a memorial was just an addition rather than a beginning. At no point in time, the nation forgot them. But this was not enough. Conflicts were planted between two or more ideologies of the pre-independence times to ignite various sections of society. Before anyone could realise, the conflicts percolated, polluted and bled the innocent minds. Cunning and autocratic administrators continue to create a dangerous aura of mistrust and misinformation by means of hate speeches and false propaganda. People are being taught animosity intentionally. Unfortunately, a large section of society is getting carried away. Rapidly spreading chaos and ambiguity may lead the nation to an anarchy-like situation.

    In a democratic structure, the elected representatives must work neither for a group of people nor for subjective ambitions, but for the benefit of society as a whole. This very principle has been purposely and conveniently kept under cover since the inception of democracy. A subtle authoritarian attitude is obligatory for any director, but the thought seems to have crossed all the limits in the present-day. Interests have become subjective, dangerous and selfish. ‘Swaraaj’ is everyone's right. In a frenzy to enjoy it, we have been exploiting freedom for a long time. We have been steadily forgetting that it was earned by making a great sacrifice. Swaraaj was a precious gift which should have been conserved to lead this beautiful nation to a magnificent ‘Suraaj’; but today Swaraaj is being misinterpreted as arbitrary governance. Supremacy is being misunderstood as an authority rather than accountability. Money and muscle have become indispensable and are dominating almost all the branches of many great republics. Custodians have become lords. Swaraaj is indeed a pleasant reality; but Suraaj still appears to be a far-fetched dream.

• May the World be Merry

     Violence has been a curse to mankind for ages. In the past, incidents could not reach everyone due to the unavailability of the media. The manner they were recorded might have been as subjective and biased as they are at present. Even today, we remain uninformed, moreover misinformed about many past and present facts. Segments with vested interests have always intentionally, promptly and skilfully misused the rapidly changing contemporary media. They expertly portrayed a noble person as an offender; and vice versa too, with similar proficiency. The architects who gave us the gift of the golden present-day were maliciously portrayed as villains for the damages during the course, which were both unavoidable and unintended. Distortion of facts is knowingly and purposely done to distract, offend or incite a section or a nation, leading to a conflict which usually culminates into a devastating encounter. Encounters vary in presentation and so do the wounds. The wounds may heal but the scars remain and keep reminding the following generations about the ferocity and the skirmishes of the past. Faith, belief and religion are now more potential and dangerous weapons than conventional armaments. Dirty, disgusting and murky politics have taken a sizeable toll on mankind. Filthy interests have bled humanity beyond limits. This needs to stop urgently and forever.

     Let creative thoughts take a fearless flight and kindness reach new skylines. Let us be human and humane. We cannot survive on hatred. We need to breathe compassion to stay alive. The world desperately needs sympathy to persist. Let love be supreme.

The dawn of truth will illuminate,

the horizon and the thoughts,

Each sunrise shall wipe off,

the gloom and the evil blots,

A rainbow imparting harmony,

will strengthen the humane knots,

Supreme rays kindle our strength,

to fight the darkness and the jolts.

Lines of control harsh,

may no longer rule our emotions,

Humble and sweet verses,

console the wounded nations,

Let humanity be free,

from the chains of beliefs and religion,

Pen and art be sovereign,

to dictate love and compassion.

• हुस्न-ए-सर्मा

    भारत की ज़ियादातर रियासतों^१ का साल का लंबा दौर गर्मी में बीतता है, लिहाज़ा यहाँ सर्मा^२ का इस्तिक़बाल^३ गर्मजोशी से होता है। सब को आसूदा^४ करने वाले इस मौसम के आते ही ठंडी हवाओं में नहाकर सुबह कोहरे में लिपट जाती है। ताज़ी सब्ज़ियों से मंडियाँ सँवर जाती हैं, और मुख़़्तलिफ़^५ फलों की ख़ुशबू से फ़ज़ा महक उठती है। लहलहाती फ़लाहतों^६ में इज़्तिमाअ^७ कर तरह-तरह के लज़ीज़^८ गिज़ाओं^९ का लुत्फ़^१० उठाने का भी रिवाज है।

    एक ओर सब को तर-ओ-ताज़ा करने वाला यह मौसम कई मग्रिबी-ओ-शुमाली^११ मुल्कों में क़हर भी ढाता है। तूफ़ानी बर्फ़बारी और इंतिहाई^१२ ठंड के नतीजतन् इन मुल्कों में लोग बेहद मुश्किल हालात से जूझते हैं। सर्मा हो या गर्मा^१३, हर मौसम का एक पहलू लुभावना, तो दूसरा शदीद होता है।

ग़ुरूब^१४ का पतझड़ रंगाता, ख़ज़ाँ^१५ की सूखी चादर,

खिलखिलाता तलीक़^१६ बचपन, अल्हड़ खेलती दूब पर,

ग़ालिब वल्वला^१७ जवाँ का, नाज़नीं की शर्मीली नज़र,

फ़ज़ा आसूदा, बेहोश भी, हुस्न-ए-सर्मा^१८ का असर.
